Teddy Santis may not have the most recognizable game in mainstream fashion, but his work with New Balance via his Aimé Leon Dore label has become a mainstay on digital mood boards and the downtown New York City scene. Since 2019, the Queens-native has garnered attention for his love of “old” – be it ad campaigns or silhouettes – which paved the way for the gargantuan success that has been the ALD x New Balance 550 series. Santis helped unearth the decades-old, Steven Smith-designed silhouette in late 2020, and the outdated basketball shoe has become “it” over the last two years. The Greece-loving creative has teased upcoming pairs of the 550 via his Aimé Leon Dore label in the last year, with the latest arriving via Instagram Stories. Akin to a previously-surfaced trio of the New Balance 650, a high-top counterpart to the aforementioned model from 1989, at least one recently-teased 550 from Santis indulges in a predominantly non-white, tonal ensemble. The muted green, light cream and navy pairs Teddy Santis unveiled on the gram may never see a retail launch, but their imagery indicates that the Queens-native is further experimenting with his Boston-based partners. In addition to teasing ALD 550s, the Santis shared the best look yet at one of the upcoming New Balance 991 pairs by Aimé Leon Dore. Seen in the label’s Spring/Summer 2022 lookbook, the sneaker is set to come packaged in a box that reads “made in england designed for mulberry st.” wedged in-between logos from both companies; the tan and green-clad collaboration may have originally been prepped for a release in 2021, which would’ve coincided with the 991’s 20th anniversary, but it’s also likely that tapped Santis in order to commemorate 40 years of having set up shop in Flimby, Cumbria, Either way, both parties continue to prove that they’re on top of the collaborative game. One of New Balance's 2020 highlights was, without a doubt, Aimé Leon Dore resurrecting the OG 550 silhouette and turning it from a mostly unheard of piece of sneaker history into a sought-after gem. The NB550 originally released back in 1989 as a basketball shoe, and ALD founder Teddy Santis said it was almost impossible to find any information on the silhouette, making it somewhat of an enigma. Now, after multiple collaborative colourways released in 2020, ALd are back on a brand new colourway that's part of their northern Spring offerings!Shared by ALD's head honcho on Instagram recently, this new colourway boasts a pretty similar look to the previous editions that have hit shelves. The upper has been constructed entirely out of leather, boasting a vintage vibe that sits perfectly atop the pre-yellowed sole unit. The ’N’ branding looks to be made up of a material that’s meant to emulate cracking, adding to the worn look. Having reintroduced the silhouette to the Boston-based brand’s core lineup of products in late 2020, Santis and team have transformed the Steven Smith-designed silhouette from 1989 from an unheralded archival design to one of the most celebrated retro styles of the last two years. Ahead of Spring 2022, ALD has teased three new colorways of the 550. As the sneaker space awaits for Santis to unveil the Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 991 pairs teased in his label’s Spring/Summer 2022 lookbook, it now has upcoming releases of the New Balance 550 to add to its calendars. Akin to the original four offerings launched with the help of Team SONNY, each new pair indulges in a premium, white-colored leather upper and slightly-yellowed midsole. Branding, accenting panels and performance-informed components across the sole unit, then, introduce three new colors to the ALD x New Balance roster of collaborations brown, khaki green and a deep rosewood-like hue animate respective pairs in a way that falls in-line with Santis’ expansive design catalog.
